Seems Good So Far (for Recording) Dec 24, 2008
By John Clogger It seems most DVD/CD recorders are cheaply made these days, so I was glad to find that this LG is a good recorder.
The CDs and DVDs recorded with this drive play fine. (I've tried almost all types of discs, except for DVD-RAM and dual layer DVDs. I recorded at 8x for DVD+/-R and 16x for CD-R.)
Quality scans of various manufacturer's discs recorded with this LG drive give better scores OVERALL than discs recorded with other drives I've tried. (I used multiple drives to run the quality scans using the Nero DiscSpeed tool. I checked the manufacturer IDs of the discs in the software, not just the name on the discs.)
The only thing this LG drive does poorly is CD audio reading/ripping, even with non-recordable discs. (It glitches when ripping or playing audio discs.) It may also lock your computer if you use it to play audio CDs using Windows Media Player in Vista. (If this happens, you'll have to disconnect the drive before you'll be able to reboot.) DVDs play and read OK, though. (Even in Media Player.) The drive is also unable to perform the disc quality scans on DVDs with the Nero DiscSpeed tool. So you'll need a second drive for audio CD reading/ripping and quality checks. This works out good for me. The internal BenQ drive that came in my HP computer is good at CD reading/ripping and can do the quality scans, despite being poor at recording. So I just use the BenQ for audio CD ripping/reading and quality scans, and the LG for everything else. (Even if your internal drive is poor at recording or the burns fail, it may still be good at audio CD reading/ripping.)
This LG drive is, overall, better for recording than the other brands of drives I have tried, which are:
Phillips/Ben Q Internal: Came with my HP computer. Good at CD reading/ripping, but poor at recording. (Burns discs that are hard for other players to recognize).
Pioneer External: Good at CD/DVD reading, but poor at DVD recording. (Consistently makes DVDs that glitch in the same spot in multiple drives/players that are compatible with recordable discs.)
Sony External: Drive is OK at CD audio ripping and DVD reading. However, the first one died under warranty. The replacement seems to really only like recording to discs with a manufacturer ID of CMC Magnetics. Although discs with other manufacturer IDs generally burn successfully and do play OK in other players/drives, they tend to get low quality scores when scanned using the Nero DiscSpeed tool.

One of the best External DVDwriter out there. Aug 11, 2008

This DVD writer is for both desktop and laptop, with minimum system requirement, and is no doubt one of the best in the market. I have tried many of the burners and by far, like this one most. In a nutshell, it's easy to use, excellent performance, and great compatibility with pc's.

Like a Fine Watch! Oct 09, 2008
By Trevor L. Griffiths I have had great success with LG Burners. I purchased this on for using with my laptop which doesn't burn DVD's. I burned 92 Dvd's back to back which I consider a pretty good test. No glitches. Just quiet smooth operation. You can't go wrong with this unit. This is my fourth LG Burner I've purchased over the past ten years. None of them failed or didn't perform well. I just upgraded for faster drives as they came out.

One of the best External DVDwriter out there. Aug 11, 2008 One of the best out there. Very low system requirement: 1.1Ghz and 256 MB ram are sufficient. It works smoothly with my X40 and previously with my Fujitsu B3010D. It's quiet too. Very happy with it!
Excelent externakl driver Oct 10, 2008
By Scorpio It is one of the best external drivers I bought, it has all the options you need for your CD\DVD, it worth the price for a combo driver, CD-RW, DVD-RW and light scribe. The reason that I gave 4 stars for this hardware because of the power supply, which it make plugging the driver between two laptops and a desktop quite annoying, but I highly recommend this external driver for a desktop. One more thing, Nero Express 7 (Full Version) is available with LG driver.
