Great Netbook Jan 09, 2011
By JP I was looking for a device that was ultra portable and capable of handling basic computing tasks such as essays, presentations, and spreadsheets. The ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD-MU17-BU has met those expectations. My daughter uses it every week to support her school work, and she really likes the 8+ hours of battery life.
I have loaded the usual software including Open Office and an upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. The netbook has handled everything with ease. Given that it's a netbook, we have to accept that we're not going to do extensive video editing or gaming on this machine. However, we downloaded and played video from my daughter's camcorder without a problem.
The only upgrade I've done is to increase the RAM from 1GB to 2GB. That was driven primarily because I saw RAM on sale at Amazon and couldn't "resist" buying the extra RAM.
The only negative is that the speakers are a little "tinny" but not bad for such a small computer. We use a pair of headphones or external speakers when sound quality is important. Also, we haven't had it that long so I cannot yet comment on durability.
Overall, a really nice machine.
UPDATE - Jan 12, 2012 I just finished "cleaning up" the netbook after not having touched it for the past year. It was running a little slow but now runs like new. It has been a great machine and has handled daily use. It's a shame that netbooks have been getting so little attention given they are a great combination of portability AND function. Tablets simply don't have the functionality beyond web browsing....without spending significant money on add-on peripherals.

Great little computer Dec 31, 2010
By H. Prinsloo This is my first time owning an Asus computer. The ASUS Eee PC has a solid build, small and very light. Easy to carry around or even to add to a handbag.
I bought the netbook for my wife and she mainly uses this to listen to music connected to a Mint Studio Wireless system...surf the net...and to check email.
I am not sure about the 8 hour battery life. Feels more like 6 hours to me. For some reason the sound controls on the keyboard are not functioning the way it should and I need to look into this to see if there is a configuration setting that needs to be set correctly.
Setting up the pc is easy without hassle. Connected to the home network painlessly.
Windows 7 Starter is ok..does the job. Although you cannot change the desktop images from Win Starter...you can download software that will allow you to do this. Research the software before you install it to make sure it does not contain virusses or malware.
The 10 inch screen(due to size) is getting use to especially if you surf the web or read emails...however...I like the non glossy screen.
The white finish is very attractive.
I have done quite a lot of research before I decided on buying this model. Therefore I do recommend this to anyone.

My first netbook Apr 21, 2011
By Yarii For 3 months I researched netbooks online as well as trying them out in local stores. For the price and the quality, I don't think you can beat this ASUS. Most I tried in stores felt cheap and toy-like and were at least $50 to $75 higher.
The exterior has a neat faux carbon fiber texture to the surface. The screen is matte and that's good since I plan on sitting outside on the deck if the weather ever cooperates - so there won't be a shiny glare. (ETA: It's finally warm enough to be on the deck and the screen does very well in both shade and sun). Slightly larger than a book, and under 3 lbs. with the battery installed. It has a USB port on the right side as well as the left so it's easier to insert the mouse rather than stringing the cord over from the left. (I hate touch pads). Believe it or not, a lot of netbooks and even some cheaper laptops have no USB port on the right side.
This model has the 6 cell battery which is supposed to have 8 hours of battery life. So far it's been closer to 6.5 hours for me. When I am downloading programs to install I use the function key to turn off the backlight to the screen so that helps with the battery life. I have a feeling that using a mouse helps to drain the battery faster than using the touchpad alone.
My netbook is for casual use, nothing work related. I am using it for web browsing, emails, simple Word documents, and photo editing after downloading pictures from my camera. There's an opening for an SD card on the side so it's easy to transfer photos from a digital camera without getting out the camera's USB cord.
This comes with Windows 7 Starter and 1 GB of RAM, with a 250 GB hard drive. It also comes with a dumbed down version of Microsoft Office 2010 with Word and Excel only. No Outlook or PowerPoint. Word and Excel are not full-featured but they have enough features for the average user for basic documents. And this is NOT a trial version of Office.
I don't plan on upgrading to Win7 Home Premium as Win7 Starter suits my needs fine. Some people complain that with Starter you are limited to just the basic Windows symbol for wallpaper, but really....how often do you really look at a picture on your desktop?
This netbook also comes with a built-in web cam and mic and works well with Skype.
Unfortunately ASUS added some bloatware such as Cloud, some games, etc., which I uninstalled with no problems. There is also a 30 day trial version of Trend Micro Platinum, which did not work with my Yahoo homepage so I uninstalled the Trend Micro and installed Avast Free antivirus in its place. Works great and is not a memory hog.
I'm currently running Firefox 5 instead of IE8 which came on this; I was a little concerned that Firefox 5 wouldn't work due to one of the requirements being a Pentium 4 or higher processor, but it works fine since Win7 Starter is 32-bit.
Besides the battery not "truly" having an 8 hour life, my other complaint is the crappy speakers. Turned up as high as they go, they are audible only when you have no other noises around you. Headphones don't help much either. A little more volume from these speakers and I would have given this netbook 5 stars instead of 4.
NOTE: I read a couple reviews here complaining about the lack of programs or programs being hard to find...after you do the Win7 set-up, click on the Windows symbol in the lower left corner, click on "all programs" and you will see you get quite a lot - then right click and send the shortcut to your desktop. :)
ETA: I decided to upgrade the RAM so I purchased a 2 GB memory card from Crucial. I installed it and can't tell much difference other than when having 2+ windows opened at the same time, switching between them seems 2 or 3 seconds faster than with 1 GB RAM. So I'm not sure if it was worth the $25.

Awesome little netbook Mar 04, 2011
By D. Steinhauer This is my first netbook, and I love it. It's about the size (and weight) of a book, and I use it more than I imagined I would, and so does my wife. It's surprisingly fast for a single-core 1.66 GHz machine. The monitor is nice and bright, and sharp. I love the feel of the touch pad, and the multi-touch capability. It is very quiet, and the battery really does last close to the specified 8 hours (maybe more like 6-7 hours).
I immediately installed Ubuntu netbook edition, which is working out well; I've hardly booted into Windows since. All the functions work well in Ubuntu, though I had to follow some instructions I found on Google to get the multi-touch scrolling to work (the multi-touch zoom function doesn't work though in Ubuntu).
My only complaint (a minor one) is the feel of the keyboard. The keys are flat, rather than concave like most keyboards, and they feel kind of cheap (though this is true of many modern laptops). The up and down arrow keys are tiny. But I'm used to the keyboard by now; not enough to affect my rating of 5 stars.

Second one purchased as a present Jan 10, 2011
By Jeff® I bought this for my son who is in 8th grade and taking computer class. I have one (with a couple more options) and I love it. I can do nearly anything with it that I can do with my "big" computer, except video capture/edit and some high end games. I also use mine as a GPS display with MS Streets & Trips and as a dashboard via an OBD-II bluetooth interface. If you're looking for a netbook, this needs serious consideration.
