Great Little Netbook Feb 04, 2011
By randomreview After purchasing the horrid 99$ CVS netbook that wouldn't even boot up, I wasn't sure if I should give the netbook world another try. This netbook had no reviews on it either, and I don't like being the guinea pig. However, I'm glad I did try! This little netbook is great. It is very portable, and easy to use. In fact, I'm using it right now! There are a lot of programs pre-installed that made this netbook a little slow, so I uninstalled them.
Update 9/19: I upgraded my netbook's ram to 2 gbs. I purchased the kingston valueram. Makes the netbook run a lot faster, and I am even more happy :D. My netbook still runs nice and solid.
Setup: Setup was a snap! I booted it up, and was happy to see that the screen was going somewhere. I finished it in about 25 minutes. I was afraid that it would not work when it stopped at a screen that said something like "configuring your machine." I was relieved when it changed, which was after five minutes. Guess I just wasn't patient.
Display: Display is great. No glossy screen, so it doesn't reflect sunlight as much. However, I think that the screen is a little too rectangular, or maybe its just because it's small. It's also bright. Anyway, I'm satisfied.
Windows 7: I had all the intention of instantly upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium, but Windows 7 Starter isn't too bad. For this netbook, it's mainly not changing the background. The background looks pretty good, actually, and Windows 7 Starter did everything I needed. I didn't pay the extra 80 bucks to upgrade.
Keyboard: The keyboard is a little small, I think its 95% of a normal keyboard. It's easy to get used to, though. The keyboard doesn't flex or bend, and seems to be very rigid.
Ports: It's got 2 usb ports, 1 vga port, power plug port, ethernet port, a headphone/microphone combo port, and a kensington lock port. I've purchased a kensington lock from amazon, and it fits quite nicely on this netbook. I would have liked another usb port. I purchased a 4 port usb hub from ebay for more ports.
Touchpad: Touchpad is nice, and relatively sensitive. Multi-touch is very useful. The thing I don't like about this touchpad is that it is not recessed, and I sometimes touch it on accident, moving my cursor.
Wifi: Wifi is good, and had no problem connecting to my internet. Works fast. However, there is no dedicated on/off switch, and needs to be turned off by fn+F2 keys.
Battery: It lasts about 3 hours and 30 minutes on half brightness display, which is bright enough. Not as long as advertised, so a little disappointed there.
Speakers: Speakers on the bottom, not the best sound, but bearable, much more bearable than all Ipod Touches.
Design: They say "Carbon Fiber Texture." I don't know about that, but it is very fingerprint-resistant, and keeps clean.
Fan: The fan is really silent, compared to my toshiba notebook. I didn't hear it on my netbook much.
Charger: The charger is small and simple. It's only one piece, instead of two, which my toshiba notebook has.
Webcam: It seems that most netbooks and pretty much all notebooks have a webcam now. At 0.3 Megapixels, you really can't expect much from it. It's a little grainy, but it's relatively smooth. I haven't used skype to call yet, which is pre-downloaded in the netbook, but I tested the camera's quality using skype.
Anti-virus: I use AVAST free antivirus, and it works well. Deleted whatever random antivirus trial that was on here.
Other options: Overall, its a great netbook and I would recommend it. The battery life is enough for me, and for 260 bucks, its hard to beat.
And if any of you are wondering, I purchased the black one because it was cheaper at the time ($260) instead of ($275) for the white one. I also don't like that the white one has a black frame around the screen.
My first netbook(that works), and would recommend.
I'll update and add more info periodically.
Software: I installed Libre Office(free word/spreadsheet... processor), AVAST anti-virus, google chrome, and my printer software.
1 problem: After I turn on, then put to sleep, then wake up, the FN button, when clicked with a f# button, does its job, then turns the netbook to sleep. I've contacted ASUS, and they'll repair it for me. I have to pay for shipping there, and they'll pay for shipping back.
-Received it back today, and the problem has NOT been fixed. I will not be sending it back again, and just stick with the problem, because the problem is not too big because most of the fn functions have other ways of accessing it.
Please comment about what else you would like to know about this netbook.

A definite cool little machine Feb 03, 2011

"Half Full"
Awesome value for a college student who just needs Firefox and the Microsoft Office Suite. It gets the job done and is ridiculously portable. I dropped it hard and it took it like a champ. Battery life lasts only about 4hrs when working on it constantly but who needs more per day for a net book. But literally will charge half a battery in 20 min. If your dinosaur of a laptop broke(Myself) and you are looking for something in between the library and other computers this is the best $250 I've spent on a computer. Plus I get a lot of complements on the white color!

one of the keys on the keyboard is crooked, but otherwise this is a great computer for the money. Very portable. Great display. Windows 7 Starter is kinda dumb, won't let me change the background image. But yeah, I would highly recommend this PC to anyone needing a good computer that's very portable. The multi-functionality of the touchpad is pretty good.

About that new Netbook - Love it Feb 18, 2011
By Brian F. Sergeant My wife and I are really enjoying our(her)new Asus Netbook which we have had for about a month now. I'm not a tecno-geek, so I can't give you my technical analysis but I can simply state that we are very pleased with this machine. It's got a great overall design and feel and everything seems to be working smooth and effeciently with very minor occasional langs. I've downloaded Microsoft Professional office without any issues. In fairness, I will admit that I went ahead and purchased the 2GB Ram chip from Crucial right from the get go. I haven't had occasion to try out the webcam with an actual skype two-way call; but it seems to project my image well on the monitor so I am sure it will be fine when used traveling. I have no regrets and my wife loves it, I feel it was money well spent.

Satisfied customer Feb 09, 2011
By Marcia Thomas The delivery was fast. I love this little netbook because it is light enough to carry along with my college books. I have to remember that it is not as powerful as my laptop. I am upgrading the 1gb memory to a 2 gb. It is better to use the 2GB DDR2 SODIMM 200pin PC2-6400 800MHz Hynix HYMP125S64CP8-S6 the same name brand in my ASUS netbook.
Update: I was able to add on other softwares such as Open Office, Visual Basic Studio 2010, QBasic, Alice2.2, Mozilla, Wamp Server etc. I used EASEUS Partition Master to make a little adjustment.
Just out of curiosity, I added Winamp for video but the OS will not except Real Player. No problem... Avast anti-virus, I love too. I must remember not to treat it like my HP laptop. But it is a great little netbook so far.
