Asus Eee PC 1008P in-depth Apr 02, 2010
By A. Baali
"A.B."
I did a lot of research and waited a long time before buying this Netbook; I totally love the gorgeous look and finish, the ports are hidden under covers. Reasons I selected this model: the New Intel Atom N450, 2GB of memory (vs. 1 GB factory installed for most Netbooks), Win7 Home Prem. (vs. Starter Ed for other Netbooks), Wireless N, Bluetooth (I use a BT Wireless mouse), 1.3 MP webcam... Etc. Overall it is a very well equipped, very light and portable Netbook. The screen is sharp and easy to read even outside (not under direct sun light). The keyboard is really comfortable and easy to use. Absolutely love the Express Gate, it is a stand-alone operating system from ASUS that boots up in seconds and provides the essential appz such as File Explorer, internet browser, photo viewer... in seconds I am connected to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot and good to go. The Cons are: 1) The most important thing for the Netbook is the battery life; on this one... it sucks! Better explain in numbers, Watching a movie from the Hard Drive with Bluetooth and Wireless both OFF and battery set on power saver: ~3 Hrs, Streaming video online with Wireless ON & BT OFF and battery set on balanced: ~2.5 Hrs, normal internet surfing (No Stream) with Wireless ON & BT OFF and battery set on power saver: ~4 Hrs, Video chat with Wireless ON & BT ON and battery set on balanced: ~2 Hrs, playing light games (like Luxor 3) full screen with BT and Wireless both OFF and battery set on power saver: ~2 Hrs. I haven't yet tried to run it on High Performance battery setting for a long time!! The battery never lasted for 4.5 Hrs or more no matter what I turn off and on which settings the battery is; the 6 Hrs battery life is inaccurately advertised! 2) Surprisingly it is not very responsive, I was expecting way better than that! I understand that it is designed for web surfing and light applications and this is exactly what I'm using it for, if I stream a video on YouTube and I have 3 more tabs open in IE for email, news, blogs... the video breaks up really bad! Close a couple of tabs and it works fine! I mean for a 1.66 GHz dual core CPU and 2 Gigs of RAM you think it can do better. Now the performance significantly improve when it's connected to AC power and set the battery to high performance but the Netbook should be a portable device, if I have to stay plugged to AC power, I would rather prefer to use my 17" laptop! 3) The 1024x600 resolution is not compatible with a lot of websites and applications, seriously... the manufactures has to get out of this box, 1280x720 is totally doable in this screen size!
I would still recommend this Netbook but purchasing an additional battery is a must, which by the way I wasn't able to get an extra battery, I've been looking since the day I placed the order till the time I'm writing this review, I have searched the internet without luck and contacted ASUS several times regarding this and they keep telling me that it will be available in Amazon and some other websites in the near future... I'm still waiting.

Everything is perfect except for overheating Mar 30, 2010
By Jordan This netbook was a perfect buy for my wife. We have purchased ASUS netbooks before but this one (unlike the others) has a very sturdy and well built feel to it while the others feel flimsy. The only complaint I have is the bottom of the netbook gets so hot that it burns to have on your lap. I've owned several laptops/netbooks and have never had a machine cook like this. The netbook would get 5/5 stars if it weren't for the concerns I have with the device overheating easily.

Exactly what I wanted Mar 16, 2010
By Donna Smith I did a good deal of reading and research before purchasing this ASUS Eee. I was attracted by the 2 gigs of RAM that were included, allowing a full version of Windows 7 to run. It is light, easy to tote around, and full featured -- right down to the webcam. The tracker pad is comfy and responsive. Display is not sharp and gorgeous like bigger computers, but it is more than adequate for my portable computing purposes. This is not a desktop replacement, but how great for business trips and vacation -- can't wait to use it for offloading photos while traveling using the built-in SD card slot!
The design is lovely -- the brown is classy looking and not *too* attention-grabbing, and all the slots and inputs are hidden away under discreet covers. I am enjoying this computer after a month and will update as some more time passes.

1008P-KR Warning Warning Warning Apr 09, 2010
By Bill The other reviews are accurate; it is a very nice netbook. However, many of the reviews at other reputable sites state that it comes with two batteries. It does not! This is not Amazon's issue; it's Asus's. Did Asus ship it to the pro reviewers with two? And, ship it to the masses with only one? Also, at this time it appears that even buying a second battery is not an option. Neither Amazon nor the Asus e-store list it. Note: Asus customer service sent me to their e-store ... enough said. So yes, it appears to be a well built, attractive, netbook with 2G of RAM and Windows 7 Home Premium. But, you are looking at only three hours (+/-) of running time before you need to recharge the (as in one) battery. All the reviews that talk about how easy it is to pop in the spare battery ... moot. Overseas flights? Professional Conferences? All day at school? Forget about it. Do you really want to spend $500 for only three hours of running time? Be sure this limited time will work for you before you order. Also, absent the availability of a replacement battery, it is a rather expensive "disposable netbook". I've written to Asus and will post a follow-up review when/if they respond.
Follow-up: After unanswered e-mails and several calls to Asus, being told "it only comes with one" and "go to the asus [...]" to buy another battery (the e-store doesn't list a replacement battery for this model), and being put on indefinite hold (the last call was 27 minutes--on my nickel as they don't have or make readily available a toll-free number), I bailed and asked Amazon if I could return it.
The Amazon prepaid return shipping label arrived within seconds.
The Bottomline: Amazon is a first-class ethical company. I'll continue to buy from Amazon--including another netbook. However, never will I buy another Asus product.
BTW, google "Asus customer service rating". When I did, 62 of 66 comments were negative.

The perfect size to carry in your purse or briefcase, this netbook is small and user friendly! It's super-compact, turns on quickly (and closes down quickly, when you are in a hurry). It has PLENTY of GB space to run software programs and is great for pictures as well. When I brought this baby into the IT folks at my work, they were fighting over who got to install software, as this is a top-rated computer amongst them!!
Only one critique: The hardest part for me is that the touch pad is really sensitive, so I bought a mini-mouse for when I am in Word documents.
