4Great little netbook!  Nov 08, 2010 By LESLIEH48307
I just got this netbook yesterday and it was supposed to be a Christmas present from my boyfriend, but I just couldn't wait to open it. I haven't put it down since!

It's small and compact, and is pretty quick. In the item description, it states that the hard drive is 160 GB. When I got the computer, I read the box and it states that the actual formatted capacity is less and may vary depending on preloaded materials and operating environment. When I actually looked at my computer's hard drive, it was 133 GB. I just wanted to share that because I know that some people will use this for pictures, video and music. I am using it almostly exclusively for surfing the internet, emails, and Microsoft Word.

The keyboard is 93% of a normal sized keyboard. Yesterday it was pretty difficult to type because I wasn't used to it, but today I'm doing a lot better! The only problem with my typing is that I keep forgetting that you can't put your wrists down on the touchpad because that moves the cursor and I end up typing where I don't want to type. I did purchase a wireless mouse, which works great, but unfortunately you cannot disable the touchpad built into the notebook.

The battery life is approximately 4 hours, give or take. I would like to have a 6 cell lithium ion battery instead of the 3 cell, but I don't know if they have 6 cell available for this particular netbook.

The one downside is that you have the choice of small print or medium print. If you choose to use the small print, it is so small that your eyes need to rest after about an hour. Besides that, when on the internet, you cannot read a lot of the words because the letters actually blend into one another. So, I use medium print. However, it makes it much more difficult to navigate the internet because not only do I have to scroll down, but I also have to scroll over to see the entire page.

It's thin, compact and portable. It works great for what I need it for! My daughter has an iPod touch 8GB new generation, and now she wishes that she had one of these netbooks instead!

3Size, weight, and noise  Nov 21, 2010 By Jack "bdcu"
This is one of the lightest netbooks around at 2.2lbs (1.03kg = MacBook Air!) for 3-cell configuration. The adapter is very portable and slim at .4lbs (187 grams). It is an elegant, elongated wall wart that plugs into the wall. The plug can even be turned 90 deg to fit your outlet. I think it's the best thing about this Acer product, and they are using it for their newer 11.6" CULVs 1430 and 1830, too. I hope other makers follow this trend and eliminate the thick AC cable at the wall end.

The AOD255 itself is also very thin: at a time when Sony, Dell, and HP gets fat and lazy with 3+lb netbooks that measure 1.2" (3cm) thick, Acer cuts it down to 1" (2.5cm) from front to back (3-cell). At netbook scales, these minute differences in weight and size makes all the difference. To be fair, HP's latest netbooks are lavishly detailed and finished, at the cost of bloated size and weight; the Dell Mini 10 (1018) is passively cooled with only minimal hard drive noise, but looks (and weighs) like it ate the AOD255 for lunch. Toshiba NB500/520 is also needlessly heavy and bulked up, touting Harmon Kardon speaker quality (hint: it's not so good as those speaker grills look). Netbooks makers, Asus (see the EeePC 1018) and Acer excepted, seems to neglect the miniaturization opportunities afforded by the Atom platform. And people wonder why tablets and smartphones are in vogue.

When I bought this I thought it would be the closest I'd get to the VAIO X in terms of portability, a fair compromise at 1/4 the price, and approx. 40% more weight. Why did I want to return it then?

The Fan Noise.

The vent is wider at the bottom of the case, with 3 slits at the top clearly obstructing the airflow, creating a whole lotta turbulence noise, but no wind I can feel. It's like the architect routed your chimney stack to drainage pipe level. The heat gets recirculated inside, making this Atom netbook much hotter than my CULV Acer 1410 (U3500). What's worse, the noise is high(er) pitched. This is an obvious engineering oversight approved by a product manager who hears not, or a designer without common sense.

But still, if you can live with the high frequency noise when doing anything besides typing, and it's silent while just typing, in notepad, I think you'll appreciate its class-leading form factor. The ten or so tabs I keep open in Firefox, however, barely give it any idling rest.

5Great Netbook - Great Gift  Dec 03, 2010 By Shaun Nixon
I bought this gift for my wife a couple of weeks ago from another online site.
So far it has been an excellent investment.

Pros: Lightweight, easy to install, faster than Vista. Mine boots in under a minute. Price was excellent. According to some reviews online this is the first Acer Aspire netbook to come out with a dual core Intel Atom processor. It was released in Oct of 2010.

Cons: A little bogged down with pre-installed software. No optical drive (DVD/CD). Initial install setup time is around 20-30 mins, you cannot simply turn it on and use it.

Other Thoughts: Ok, only had it for two weeks now, but will change this if necessary. First I uninstalled Mcafee, Norton, and Office trial. Googled Windows 7 apps, read reviews and installed: Google Chrome Browser, AbiWord, Gnumeric Spreadsheet, VLC Media Player, Panda Antivirus, Paint.net, 7 zip, foxit pdf reader. These programs were recommended for a faster experience on Windows 7 Starter and they certainly deliver. Using Chrome is comfortable and fast. Foxit is faster than Adobe. Also consider installing enhancemyse7ven to keep your new pc optimized. This pc is still new but it seems reliable so far. It's probably as fast as XP which came out 8 years ago. The battery seems to last long. It boots up in about 57 seconds (at least mine does). I originally was going to install a Linux OS like Ubuntu but after seeing how well Win 7 starter was working, I decided to keep it. If anything changes I will update this review.

3Good, But Needs Polishing  Feb 25, 2011 By MagnumMan
Good Points:

* Minimal Bloatware. Other than the usual games you don't want and the MS Office offer, there isn't much to remove. Thank you, Acer.
* Decent construction, nothing spectacular. Typical netbook plastic but it does seem strong.
* Screen can literally lay flat. Many consider this an advantage although I don't see why.
* Bright screen that's easy to read.
* Dead on wireless that never dropped lower than 65% at 60 feet from my wireless router. Always stayed strong and located some signals I didn't know in the area.
* DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2 and it does make a difference, albeit minimal.
* For a 10 inch screen I don't have to scroll as much as I thought. Resolution is just about right.
* Where's the power brick? It's built in to the plug wall connector instead of dangling halfway down the cord. Nice design!
* Extra long power cord is a nice touch. It's even longer than my Lenovo cord.
* This puppy can't weigh much more than 3 pounds fully loaded with battery.
* Can hit 4 hours on battery (but see notes below). Adding a 6 cell battery allegedly can jump it to 8 to 10 hours but costs an additional $80.
* Watching videos is not a problem. Decent video card for Atom.
* Comes installed with Netflix trial, New York Times reader, Barnes and Noble reader and EBay. B&N didn't work and I uninstalled EBay but the other two are just fine.
* MS Office Starter is there and that's all I need. No reason to pay for the full blown program when all I use is Word. I'll live with the ads.
* McAfee Internet package is pre-installed and requires no intervention. Whether that is good or bad is questionable, but it does save the hassle of having to install the trial.
* It's quicker than you think although not notebook quick. Much better than the previous single core netbooks.
* Decent, but not awe inspiring sound. Fires from the bottom front so it'll be a little muffled.
* Kudos to Acer for not having the half hanging SD card slot. This one is flush with the unit although you'd better have fingernails to fish it out since you have to press and wait for it to bounce back out.
* The semi-invisible trackpad is unique and adds a certain high end look to the unit.
* Opt for Ubuntu? Works twice as fast while using less resources and RAM.

Bad Points:

* Eats RAM for breakfast. Averages 65% RAM usage even at rest. Also demands 800MHz RAM and not the 1GHz you'll think of buying. Even when maxed to 2GB Starter insists on pulling 50% (but Ubuntu uses just 30% of the same RAM).
* Windows Starter is limited, rarely works the same twice, hogs resources and updates from MS actually caused it to work worse! Oh, and thanks to MS for delaying my initial usage 2 hours while waiting for 300MB of security patches to download and install.
* Replacing RAM or HDD requires complete disassembly of unit (not for the meek). Go to YouTube for instructional video.
* Awful power connector design that's an accident waiting to happen. When plugged in it has no side support and can be easily snapped off.
* Inconsistent battery usage. Sometimes I get 4 hours while internet surfing but other times I pull a meager 2.5 hours doing nothing. Go figure. See below about difference with Ubuntu vs. Starter.
* VGA but no HDMI. Doesn't matter to me but some live on HDMI.
* Instant fingerprint magnet. Ever hear of matte? Absolutely zero chance of keeping this clean. Plastic also attracts dust like a Swiffer.
* Toasty when running. Unless you live in Alaska during the winter this is not a true lap sitter. The bottom becomes unbearable hot but the top stays reasonable.
* Remember to deactivate touchpad when typing or cursor will jump all over creation when your wrist gets close (Fn+F7).
* McAfee is great and works seamlessly, but if you don't register you'll get nags at every boot. It's $50 to renew for a year after the 45 day trial so it sounds like Zone Alarm and AVG for me when the 45 is up.

This could be a stellar netbook but upgrading requires nothing short of a jackhammer and Windows Starter is barely adequate.

If it came with Ubuntu as standard it would work so much better. 1GB base RAM causes slow boots and sometimes poky responses when multitasking in Starter, but even adding another GB RAM still didn't alleviate these problems.

Part of this I blame on Microsoft for issuing an OS that was obviously full of holes from the start. 300MB of security patches and unknown fixes straight out of the box does not inspire confidence. It also didn't help that these "updates" caused an already shaky OS to work even worse.

But here's a real kicker. Remember the heat problem I mentioned above? When using Ubuntu the unit still gets very warm but not as much as with Windows Starter (I dual boot and can tell the difference). This mean Starter is taxing the Atom processor.

If this unit came with Ubuntu or even XP I'd give it another star but until then it gets just 3.

4It still works... wait till you see where it's been ....  Jan 28, 2011 By W. BrennanDubbs
I bought this little critter as a backup to my desktop. I put my business on both. I have a backup hard drive on it... I don't trust any electronics. But when the desktop has problems, the Acer rescues me. This Acer has been in a day pack and jammed into a kayak floating down the Amazon for 21 days, it's been in a backpack for 5 weeks walking\hiking in Peru. It's just returned from 3 weeks of trekking in Nepal (dust, snow storm, jarring drops, constant jiggling), a week in India and China. It gets put into my briefcase nearly daily and tossed into the car or tied the back of a motorcycle. It's been camping in Yosemite... blah blah and it's still working. Runs a little slow... hey, it's a $300 machine what do you expect? If you want speed and a real key board spend $300 more and get a 15" machine. This is not fun to type on all day either. But if you wish to check email, do some smaller word.doc's, give a powerpoint presentation, then this little less than 3 pound machine does it. Now I did buy at the start a 2 gig ram chip. Took out the one gig, but in a two gig. Did it myself and I don't know what I'm doing, so it must not be that hard. Supposedly this increased my speed by 18% or so, don't know that I notice it much. Hard to tell the difference between a 2second and a 1.5 second delay. One thing about these customer reviews is that they're always recent, I thought it would be nice to see a longer term review. I gave it 4 stars because as other have said "it's a little slow", but gosh, it's otherwise doing really well. My Acer was purchased June 30 2009. I'd buy another one if a yak broke it or an elephant stepped on it. Enjoy the day, R
