Description

Case only, does not include the drive.

This external enclosure is using USB 2.0 and is backward compatible with USB 1.1. Most Pentium II, Pentium III and early Pentium IV laptops and computers have USB 1.1. It can be powered by USB 2.0. Some USB 1.1 ports do not have power and you have to use the keyboard connector to draw power(cable is provided). In most cases you can use both cables to draw enough power to run this drive properly especially when using it to write cdroms or dvdroms

5Great DVD case  Jul 14, 2011 By Paul
This is a fantastic DVD case. Works perfect. Heavy duty plastic and solid construction. I was amazed at how perfectly tight it fits the drive. I would not hesitate to buy more of them to revitalize spare laptop DVD drives.

The instructions do not show pictures of how to assemble it. The case actually comes apart in a top and bottom half but that was not obvious at first because it fits together so perfectly. Rather than pry it apart with force, slide the top towards the back and it unhooks the snaps and lifts apart easily. Put the drive in and then either snap the top on or press the top down a little ways back from the front of the bottom half and then slide it forwards. It all fits together without force or one little bit of spare room. 2 screws in the back, which reach to the drive, hold the whole thing together.

For me the drives fit perfectly. The front bezel recesses into the case rather than sticking out. If you wanted to use your original bezel and it was wider or higher than the inside dimensions of this case, you would need to shave the case a bit shorter or yshave your bezel.

Other buyers talked about drive issues that have nothng to do with the case; such only having manual eject, sticking when opening and writing problems. My good drives had none of these problems and the case is fine. This case will not make bad drives better. All USB powered devices, which have moving parts, benefit from an extra USB connection for power. Flash drives do not, but HDs and DVDs do. Get a separate USB power adapter if you are low on ports. Belkin makes a nice one.

I tried 8 different drives and they all worked as expected. Some of the drives were known to be defective but the drives were recognised, allowed drivers to be installed automatically and seemed to work fine with Windows 7. Those same bad drives read well but did not write on my Windows 2000 PC. The point is the USB to SLIM adapter in this case seems to be compatible with all the drives and any issues are with the drives; not this case or the drivers.

The case comes with Windows 98 drivers because the other OSs already have the drivers they need.

Some buyers mentioned missing bezels or screws. I had none of those problems but yes it would be a bummer if the case was missing any parts.

Can't say enough about this case. And all for close to $6.

5Good product  Apr 15, 2009 By C. Lee "Jay"
It contains everything--case, IC board, cables -- you'll need to convert a notebook DVD to an external Slim DVD.
And it's much cheaper than getting a new one !
Though case itself is 3mm longer than my DVD-ROM and it will stock the tray, it's not a big problem -- maybe I will cut the case, just let it a little bit open, or just fix the DVD to the IC board only.
The case is plastic which is really ideal for me since I don't want any additional weight with it and it also makes the low price possible !

5Works Great  Dec 19, 2011 By Wet Chicken Nugget
I purchased this to use with a DVD burner out of my dead laptop. I wasn't expecting much for the price I paid, I was just hoping that it would work. I've only had it a couple of day, and to be honest have only used it to test it out, but I am very pleased. It's made out of all plastic, but it seems pretty thick and durable. The so called instructions are worthless, but it's easy to see how to remove the old front plate and install the new one. Assembly is easy once you figure out how (the top and bottom slide together - do not try and snap them together or pry them apart).
I used to use a USB to SATA/IDE adapter cable with a full sized DVD drive when I needed an external dive, but this is way better.
I would highly recommend this if you have a spare drive out of your old laptop.

P.S. It doesn't really say, but this is for IDE drives, not SATA drives. The connector is a small rectangular connector with contacts on the top and bottom rows. It does not look like the big IDE connector from a full sized drive.

5Works fine  Sep 14, 2011 By J. Hahn "On The Road Again"
I purchased this because I have a netbook and several used laptop DVD drives. I easily installed a drive into this case, put in the two included holding screws, and it was up and running perfecly. This is a great, inexpensive way to add software or data to a netbook. The kit also comes with a USB cable and an aux power cable, those are worth a few dollars alone. This is an excellent deal, I'd would buy another.

5Great/cheap solution!!  Oct 30, 2008 By ALMD12
This enclosure works very well for me, and it is a much cheaper solution that buying a pre-packaged unit for ~100$!

I recently purchased an ultra-portable laptop (asus eee 1000H) with no dvd drive, and I wanted a dvd drive 'just in case.' I pulled the dvd rw out of my old HP laptop, plugged it in to this baby, and it works! I have no problem powering it with one usb, but there is a second usb included if you need it.

When I first received the enclosure, it seemed flimsy and cheap. However, after I put the drive in, it feels very solid and looks great! Two little screws secure the drive in place, and there are little rubber feet on the bottom.

I will say the enclosure was a little too long for my drive with the face plate on, so cut a little bit of length off the enclosure. I used a utility knife, it didn't take long, and the whole thing works/looks just fine.

I use Windows XP, and I did not need/use the included installation CD. One quirk is that the computer must be turned off before you attach the usb/drive to the computer... if not, my computer immediately shuts down. However, you can remove it like any thumb drive by clicking the 'safely remove hardware' button.

I'm not all that tech savvy, but I'm pretty sure it uses an IDE connection (to the drive). The usb, on the enclosure end, is the square type that is commonly used on printers, so if you needed a longer cable it wouldn't be hard to find.
