Wonderful, inexpensive, DVD/CD ROM Dec 16, 2008
By PopFrog Needed a CD/DVD ROM to load software onto a Samsung NC-10 netbook. This one was WAY below the others in price, so I took a chance.
What a wonderful surprise! Came to me in two days from Fremont, California. The unit is solid, worked perfectly, and installed automatically on Windows XP (Driver disk included for Windows 98!). Powered smoothly from the NC-10 USB 2.0 port ( not mentioned, the unit includes an external power converter if you need it). Unit is covered in a black "rubberized" material for sure grip and non-scratch handling. It worked perfectly. As with all such "slim" drives handling the input and removal of disks requires being careful.
Simple, efficent, with a one year Warrantee, who could ask for more.

Dekcell USB Slim External DVD/CD-ROM Drive Mar 28, 2009

Excellent service. Rec'd w/n 2 days. Instruction manual not very clear. Comes with 2 cords but manual does not mention 2nd cord. I'm a stickler for following directions & since nothing was mentioned in the instructions I didn't even open the 2nd cord. When my Dell mini laptop would not recognize the drive, I emailed the vendor. They replied within a couple of hours about using both cords. After that, no problem! Good product for a reasonable price - value for my money. I like that & excellent after purchase service to boot.

Terrific product Jul 04, 2009

My netbook - while full-featured - doesn't have an optical drive. For an exceedingly reasonable price, this external drive has been perfect for me. It's powered through the USB port, so no additional power cord. It works - what else can (need I)I say?

Only works on a flat surface...a REALLY flat surface! Sep 09, 2009

This DVD player worked O.K. at first, but after storing in my laptop case for a few weeks, it stopped working right. I thought it was totally broken, but I found out it still worked only if I placed in on a flat surface. That sounds reasonable, except that most of my desk surface doesn't seem to be flat enough. It usually takes somewhere between 6 and 10 tries, moving the unit around, until it finds a good enough "spot" to start reading the disk. Weirdest thing I've ever seen! I can't carry around with my netbook, since it is so ridiculously finicky. I do not recommend.

DOA # 2 Apr 02, 2009

Maybe it's hit or miss with this brand since some have had a good experience but, I couldn't get it work with my Dell Netbook (the item I bought it for) or my HP Pavilion desktop (I tested it on that to see if maybe the problem was just with the Dell). Both computers would recognize it just fine ("New hardware has been installed") and it would show up in Explore as its own separate drive. However, whenever I inserted a disk (didn't matter what kind; commercial, homemade, blank, full of data) the same thing would always happen. The green light would flash, I could hear the disk spinning in the drive, and the computer would to try to launch it but then after a few seconds I'd get the same message over and over again, "Please insert a disk." ???? Nothing I tried worked. It is going back today.
I actually work just down the street from Dekcell in Fremont, CA. (I'm tempted to just take it right to their front door and save the postage!) It's a shame too. I purposely decided to "buy American" from a local vendor to try to help out the economy and my own community. A "win-win" right? Wrong. You can bet my next attempt at finding an external drive will be with a reliable Japanese brand I've purchased in the past.
