Inexpensive alternative to Thinkpad DVD drive Sep 19, 2010

I bought this drive for use with a Thinkpad X201 tablet PC because being an ultra-portable device it does not have an optical drive bay.
Lenovo suggests the X200 docking bay with its X series notebooks and tablet PC, but together with the DVD drive that goes with that bay that is an additional $350. Since I was not interested in the port replicator function in the X200 UltraBay but did not want to spend $150 on the external DVD drive for Thinkpad's I chose this drive instead. At $65 it saved me a lot of money. The drive works beautifully, as it should, and I used it to install all software on the X201 tablet PC. I recommend this drive anyone considering it for purchase.
Since I now own this external USB DVD drive I have also bought the Acer Aspire One 533 netbook for my wife, also without any optical drive, which will be sharing this drive now.

By Greg Purchased for Lenovo x201. It is light, sturdy and is a great compliment for the light x201. I can leave it at home, or carry it with me and not be burdened. No external power required. Plug and play - is detected in seconds on widows 7. Two minor nags. If you hate fingerprints on a device, don't touch this, honestly, it gets smudged easily. There are 'air bubbles' where the clear glue used in assembly has dried. It spoils the clean black look of the drive after you have cleaned it of fingerprints (which is a waste of time).

By John Schuyler Works fine. I wanted genuine Lenovo as I'm using ThinkPads. The drive requires two USB connections for some reason, so it comes with a Y connection cable. Glossy-finish shows fingerprints. No carrying/storage case provided.
