A solid entry-level netbook offering from MSI Mar 25, 2010
By J. Young I needed something between the capabilities of my smart phone and my home desktop computer. I wasn't trying to replace one or the other, but I wanted something that was portable like a smart phone but more powerful like a desktop. The answer? The MSI Wind L1350-430US.
For less than $300, you get a durable light weight computer that can handle basic computing tasks. There's really no need to discuss the specs because they're comparable with everything else in the segment at this price point.
I've used this netbook to surf the web, send emails, listen to music, and even play QuakeLive which ran flawlessly. Netbooks don't have a CD/DVD drive so keep that in mind if you want to install software/etc.
I only have two real complaints with this product. First, the screen is heavier than the rest of the case so it has a tendency to want to lean back if its not on a level surface. Second, my unit has a 3-cell battery instead of a 6 or 9. As a result, the battery life is around 2 - 2.5 hours. However, you can get a 9 cell battery which would probably last all day for $100 from MSI's website.
In terms of upgrades this unit can be upgraded to 2GB of RAM for about $50. If your looking to use this as a gaming device, this isn't the product for you. The Intel 3150 graphics card is fine for games that are few years old but most of the newer games will be unplayable. In that case, you should look at something with the Ion chipset at $100-$200 more. But again, for basic computing you can't beat the price and performance of this product.
As a side note, if Windows 7 Starter isn't your style you can install Ubuntu Netbook Remix via a thumb drive for free but keep in mind you will need a hard wired connection to the internet to get the updated drivers to get the wireless card to work. This may be fixed in a future release of Ubuntu but presently, its a known issue.

Solid well designed little computer Jun 03, 2010
By malibukid22 It looks like most of these netbooks come out of the same factory, but for a little over $200 this MSI is amazing. Clear screen, decent keyboard and processor speed, large hard drive, super quiet and cool operation.
Try Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.4 (previously known as Ubuntu Netbook Remix). It can be installed from a USB flash drive and set to dual boot so you can still use the Windows 7 Starter edition that comes on the netbook. No viruses, spyware, bloatware. It is a fast and efficient operating system. And, it is completely free!
Adding a 1GB SODIMM RAM chip is a no brainer. For about $30 you can double the RAM. It is easy to add, but be gentle and be careful. Remove battery pack. Unscrew all 9 philips head screws on the bottom of the computer. Gently pry up on the 2 extended pieces on either end of the battery area. Pry up the side with the fan vents first, then slide toward side with USB and mic and headphones connections. Lift off bottom cover. In the middle you will see the RAM slot. The RAM slides in at about a 45 degree angle and then you push down to lay it flat until it snaps into place with the 2 metal clasps.
The 3 cell battery pack lasts for about 2 1/2 hours. Not bad, but you can get a larger pack if you need more time.
Considering that this thing weighs a little over 2 lbs, it is amazing how powerful it is. Thumbs up for MSI.

Great little netbook! Jun 06, 2010
By M. Steiner My wife loves this little netbook. easy to setup. It's light, too, unless you add a 9 cell battery like we did.

Fun and useful little tool Jun 02, 2010

I purchased this netbook expressly for one reason, to control my Canon 5D mkII DSLR camera. It is a solid performer and does its singular task perfectly. I installed the DSLR Pro software from Breeze Systems which works great on the tiny screen. Then connected the cameras itself via USB and I can now control every aspect of the camera simply and visually, so much better than trying to use the Promote Control, from Promote systems. All in all this was about the same price for way more. The netbook itself comes with all kinds of useless software, so the first thing I did was uninstall that, then installed Google Chrome browser because of its lightweight size and small footprint (considering the 1Gb ram limitation). The 160Gb hard drive lets me temporarily store a lot of images when I'm out and about and the tethered HDRI shooting provides fantastic results. Sadly I could not install the native Canon software because of the screen size limitation, but the Breeze software is much better, so no complaints here. I've been using it for a few weeks now and it performs admirably. I had one time where I turned it on and it couldn't find the hard drive, but the battery was low, so I'm hoping the was simply an isolated event. I plugged it in and charged it up and it was fine again.
