Easy to use, easy to abuse Feb 16, 2007

I bought this to back up my hard drive to with the idea that I would reinstall windows on the hard drive and then restore from the maxtor.
***The install of the maxtor and the backup went seamlessly. It was like it had always been there. No complaints with the product****
The complaint is with me:
BEWARE if you plan to do a new install of windows to DISCONNECT THE MAXTOR before you start because people as stupid as myself delete the partition table on the maxtor inadvertently and have to pay $$ to get the data recovery afterwards - glad to pay it for what I got but not my best scenario. Someone else I know inadvertently selected the maxtor as the boot drive for windows install and now the computer brain is on the maxtor instead of in the regular place; also because someone forgot to disconnect the maxtor before the computer lobotomy commenced.

Storage Galore Feb 08, 2007

If you are looking for an external storage hard drive that it apple pie-simple to place into operation (if you can plug in both ends of a USB cord and a power cord), and which runs quieter than a stealth submarine, this is your baby. So simple, elegant looking, and a boon to store those masses of photos, files, or other junque that is presently taking up valuable "C" hard drive space. Try it -- you'll like it.

Not a good product Apr 08, 2007

I bought one and there is a problem with the USB interface. My Sony VIAO, with Windows XP Pro, complained that it was plugged into a slower USB 1.1 hub. It wasn't.
I tried on another computer, also running Windows XP Pro, and after it initially appeared to recognize the drive the computer failed to work with the drive or even recognize it when it was plugged in.
I guess I'm lucky. I can return it without any loss of data, since it never worked properly to start with.

When it fails (and it will) buy a new power cord Aug 26, 2010
By MacNevin My Maxtor Personal Storage External Hard Drive worked reasonably well for about 2 years until out of nowhere it started malfunctioning. First I got "Cannot write to drive" error messages, then I got "Code 10 Device cannot start" error messages, and finally my computer wouldn't even bootup if the USB drive was attached.
After spending hours running the troubleshooting scripts suggested by Seagate/Maxtor and Microsoft without success, I started searching on-line user forums for a solution. Time and time again I came across Maxtor users saying that their USB drives stopped working when their power cords failed.
At first I thought that the problem with my own Maxtor drive couldn't possibly be cord related because the power light on the front of the drive was solidly lit. I figured that if the green light was on, the USB drive must be getting power. But as it turns out, a failing Maxtor power cord can provide enough juice to illuminate the power light while not providing enough juice to fully bootup the drive.
So when your Maxtor USB Hard Drive stops working, buy a new power cord. Ignore the "Missing drivers" error message (this particular Maxtor drive doesn't even require unique drivers) and don't bother with Microsoft's Device Manager troubleshooting tool. Chances are good that a new power cord will get you up and running again!

Pathetic Apr 08, 2009

Died after a year of light use. Used it to store my old projects when I finished them. Now they're all "bye bye". Will never buy a Maxtor again.
UPDATE: I removed the drive from the casing and put it in another USB drive case and it works perfectly. Seems like these drives have faulty USB components which fail over time. If you don't know this, you'll end up sending it to Maxtor for their "repair service" which costs $700 plus. If you have a dead drive out of warranty, you're better off trying it in another case before sending it in. You might have the same luck as me.
