4HP dvd 555s  Jun 23, 2009 By Dietolf Rothfuss "Dieto"
I bought this external DVD player for my Laptop because it has a power adapter and I don't care that it is somewhat big. I had bad experiences with external hard drives and DVDs powered through the USB port, sometimes they don't work at all or they are sluggish. This DVD works well and that's what counts. I like it.HP NC720AA dvd555s 8X External Multiformat DVD Writer

5You MIGHT need the AC adapter-it's a simple concept  Oct 09, 2009 By P. Craig
This external optical drive is targeted towards the netbook market, and as such it is small and light. It works very well, as expected. The hangup for so many people is that it includes, and often needs, an external AC power supply. This isn't a fault of the optical drive-while reading discs draws little power, writing draws considerably more power and to ensure a reliable disc burn, HP recommends you use the power adapter. This is solely because the little netbooks can supply only so much current via the USB port. I have an HP Mini 110, and this drive, and do need the external power adapter some of the time, particularly when using other USB devices such as a mouse. Yes it's inconvenient and something else to carry, but I rarely carry it-it's more of a leave-at-home piece of equipment. I agree with other reviewers that the power supply should be included in the product photos.

3Good enough I guess  Mar 07, 2009 By M. Randall "Deadpool"
I got this cd/dvd drive as part of a package deal for my hp mini at best buy. the slighest wiggle of the cords will cause your pc/laptop/netbook to lose connection with the device. this becomes extremely irritating while burning your CDs to your computer. so i would suggest not touching the area of the drive while its in use.

1Sad Product! A Finiky Problem Child...  Oct 18, 2009 By Bob
A REAL BAD Out of Box Experience!!!Really picky about the Media used! And Hangs every PC I try it on for Shutdoun and Restart! I can get it to burn CD's and DVD's using cheap thin TDK media. But it wont even recognise Memorex or SONY LightScribe media which is a little thicker, wont work for either data side or lightscrbe side (just squeaks and growles). If i put the same Memx or Sony Lightscribe disk in my desktop internal lightscribe unit No Problem. This unit is just finiky per media!

And If you dont unplug the unit b4 shutdown or restart it hangs up power off! Goes thru shutdown ok(no messages/errors), just wont power off and/or reboot if restarting... A real pain cause it occasionally will work correctly... (but is squeaky and noisy even when it does work)

The one i got is a real intermittant pain and anoyance!
The Nero 8 Essential software that comes with it is OK and not the problem, cause it does the same stuff on another machine with full blown burn software.

Wasted too much time with this unreliable finiky unit - Its goin Back!

1What doesn't HP understand about AC adaptors?  Mar 22, 2009 By Ikat
I bought this to go with my HP Mini 1000. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I needed to use an A/C adaptor to power the drive - and the AC adaptor was HUGE. It never would have occurred to me to ask because, if you look at the product photo, no adapter is shown. So I sent it back and bought a generic that powers from a single USB port.

As the review title indicates, I think HP has a blind spot about AC adaptors. There's this, and then the adaptor from the Mini, per se. The box is small and light - but, for inexplicable reasons, it comes with BOTH a 6 foot detachable electrical cord AND a thin 6 foot cord from the adaptor to the netbook. Fortunately, the electrical plug is the same as one sold by Dell, so I was able to get a 3 foot version, which reduced the bulk, and amount of unnecessary cords, considerably. But, taking the two together, it is clear that HP gets small tiny hardware - but not small tiny accessories.

I returned it without turning it on. A complete waste of time.
