5Terrific!  Oct 07, 2007 By lizellis
I've only had this burner a few weeks but already I've burned dozens of DVDs with nary a coaster in the bunch. As the previous reviewer noted, it's very simple to use and doesn't require any elaborate set-up. Just plug it into a USB port and it's ready to produce flawless DVDs quickly and efficiently.

The drive comes with Nero 7 Essentials which includes Nero Burning ROM 7 and Nero Vision 4. I already have the full Nero suite so I didn't install it, but I'm sure it would come in handy for someone who didn't have any burning software or who wanted to sample Nero for the first time.

5Another Mac user checking in . . . it works! Also good for foreign DVDs  Feb 16, 2008 By skunktrain
I have an Intel-based Mac Mini, running Leopard (Mac OS 10.5) and this DVD burner plugged in and was instantly recognized by my Mac, as well as Toast. I've burned a data DVD with nary a problem. (And FAST!) So far, so good!

It might be useful for some users to know that you can play foreign (Region 2, etc) DVDs on this. I have a penchant for BBC dramas, but not all of them are available on Amazon.com (Region 1) so I order them from overseas. As I am too lazy to buy a proper region-free DVD player, I find that I can play these foreign DVDs on my Mac, using an external DVD drive. (Unfortunately, I cannot use my internal drive for this--the new Intel Macs' internal drive is hard-wired to somehow resist playing foreign DVDs, at least not without wanting you to switch regions, which is something to be avoided.) Well, this external drive does not have that issue--no problems playing the foreign DVD, and no switching of regions. (In order to do this, I use the free third-party software, VLC Player--Mac OS default DVD player will ask to switch regions regardless, but VLC is a great workaround.)

If you have a Macbook and would like to have copies of movies stored on your hard drive to watch while you're on the road, this drive will work for that too. It let me copy a DVD (Region 2) to my hard drive, so I can watch it later. My internal drive would protest at having to play a Region 2 disk.

5It works fine on a MAC  Jan 01, 2008 By W. Muney
I bought this usb external recorder for use on a Mac to replace a recorder that was failing.I have had it for several days now. Although it is only rated for windows the recorder works fine on a Mac under Tiger (OS X 10.4). Connect the USB cable, turn on the recorder and boot the Mac. The recorder is recognized (silently) on boot-up.
Toast 7 reads and writes CD's and DVD-R's fine. I assume it will read and write DVD+R and RW. It reads 8 cm. DVD-RAM from a Panasonic DVD videocamera fine with no extra software.
Writing to DVD-RAM takes a little more work. The 8 cm. disks are preformatted to the UFS file system which OS X recognizes as read-only. Toast can reformat the DVD-RAM only to MAC OS Extended file system, with read and write permissions, at which point the DVD-RAM is mounted and acts as a hard disk drive for only a Mac.

Since the UFS file system is a standard file system under Linux I would assume UFS preformatted disks work under Linux, but I have not tried that.
In other words, this recorder is not limited to Windows.

5easy to use  Aug 11, 2007 By P. Liao
I read through many reviews before making the decision on this external DVD drive and I have to say, it's perhaps one of the easiest products to use. You don't have to be technology savvy to understand how to use this product. As long as you're willing to spend a few minutes to read the instructions, you'll be burning tons and tons of DVD in no time!

5Could it be any easier?  Jan 10, 2008 By Luiz A. Dias
By far the easiest drive I have ever used that I had to install. Plug in the power adapter, plug in the USB cord, and off you go. No need to install any drivers at all. A little noisy, but not a hinderance at all
