Don't buy it if you plan to save data on it! Jul 28, 2010 I was givent this HD on Christmas 2009 and it just failed me today. I probably used it four hours in the eight months owning it, from home in a ventilated area. Tonight it just stopped working: no more light, not dectected anymore. From what I have gathered it's almost impossible to recuperate any data from it.
Just don't buy it!
Works good; has some limits. Jul 28, 2010 This is the second FreeAgent Desk I have. The 1st set up on wife's computer to do simple back up of pictures and music. I set it and forgot it and it seems to be backing up regularly and with no problems. She did not even notice it sitting there glowing.
I got this one to back up my work and found out that the included software will not let you back up files from a mapped network drive. I liked the included software because it is easy to understand and use by anyone who uses a computer but it lacks advanced options. I would also prefer that it could schedule the backups without the program running in memory all the time. I did find a free program that lets me backup the local and network drives to the FreeAgent and it schedules the backup's in windows scheduler so the program is not always running.
Install was easy, the drive works and is quite. I can feel when it is on when I touch it so it is not completely silent but I can't hear over my other computers. I do wish that all external hard drives had more airflow. This one has small slits on the ends for airflow and so far seems like enough.

Don't buy this product Jul 26, 2010 The specs on this product claim that it will allow you to transfer files (including written documents) from one computer to another. I have one computer that does not talk to the internet well, but I love to use it for writing. So I need a product that will allow me to transfer written documents from that computer to another one that does talk to the internet. I was hoping that this product would be the answer to my dilemma. Boy what a disappointment, not to mention a waste of money. The soft ware is so incredibly pathetic. To start off, it won't allow you to go into your documents and select the particular written file that you want to transfer (they call it sync for some stupid reason). If you click on custom sync, it will (theoretically only) let you attempt to transfer only such things as your operating system, photos, and just about everything except documents. So, then I clicked on simple sync thinking that this would suck up everything on the computer which would at least allow me to transfer everything over to the other computer then I could manually delete the hundreds of files I didn't want transferred until I whittle it down to the one that I did want transferred. So, I did that. Then I plugged the USB thingy into the other computer. And guess what? The only thing it downloaded into the other computer was my photos! Who and the hell wants their photos? None of the written documents were touched. But not only that, once it had completed "downloading" the photos it hid them somewhere in my computer where I can not find them.
In short, this thing is a total piece of junk. Nothing wrong with the hardware, it's just that the software designers are total idiots!!!
Died on me within 90 Jul 26, 2010 This hard drive worked well with my MacBook Pro for approximately the first month... then I started getting intermittent error messages that "Time Machine was not able to run a back up" which I fixed by manually "ordering" a back up... this went on for another 45 days or so and as of 2-3 days ago my computer doesn't even recognize the hard drive and a "manual" backup is not possible. I've read a bunch of these reviews and it seems that it's 50/50 with this product... Now I just (literally now) got an error message saying the computer cannot fix the hard drive... weird.
I called 1-800-SEAGATE and they, at first, wanted me to pay $20 to have them do an "advanced return" where they send me a new one and a return label and I just but the broken one in their packaging and send it back. OR I can ship it to them at my expense and they'll ship me a new one at their expense. When I complained this thing died on me in less than 90 days the lady (with a strong German accent) backed off and she is sending me a prepaid return label but I'm supposed to find all of the following (the following was cut and pasted from their email)...
Please send entire unit back to Seagate including all accessories.
This includes the following:
- All Cables and Adapters
- Product Literature and Manuals
- Installation CD's
- Power Supply
Who keeps their "Product Literature and Manuals"??? If I recall correctly it was like a 5 page pamphlet... and I hope to heck I can find that installation CD... Why do they need that anyway?
Oh and all of that has to be shipped back to them just a certain way (again cut and pasted):
Use original packaging when possible, such as packaging sent with Advanced Replacement Order:
- Enclose each drive in an ESD (electrostatic discharge) bag or in an anti-static plastic shell (SeaShell).
- Secure each unit in 2 inch-thick foam rubber in a corrugated box. Do not use peanuts, bubble wrap or newspaper. If packaging more than one drive, use a separate container for each drive.
- Print the order number on the outside of each box.
I did keep my box for 30 days (the amount of time I had to return it to the store if there was a problem) but now they want you to keep the box for 5 years (the length of the warrantee) ?!?! So, ok, I can use a normal box but now I have to come up with a box that will accommodate the unit plus that "2-inch-thick foam rubber" padding?
Oh well I'll keep you all posted.
Third Replaceent Just Died. Never again. Jul 25, 2010 I purchased an external Seagate hard drive over 2 years ago. I used it only to store photographs that I no longer had space for on my computer. About 3 months after I started using it, it died. No warning, no noises, no accidents. Nothing. Just dead. All I could hear was the disc inside spinning. computer wouldn't pick it up at all.
I called Seagate, who refused to return my money because I'd purchased it from Amazon. The only offer they'd give me was a replacement drive. I took it, figuring the first was a fluke. LITERALLY TWO MONTHS after the I started using the new one, the same exact thing happened. THANK GOD I'm anal about backing up my photos to DVDs before moving them off my computer.
I went through the same process with Seagate. IN fact, I told them I don't want any more of their drives, I just want to get my money back and go buy a Western Digital, but they wouldn't give me anything but a replacement.
They sent me a bulky 1.5 TB drive, which they assured me would be sturdier and not have these faulty issues. It has been 1 year and 2 months since this happened. I have still only been using this drive sparingly, because I do not trust it to last or save anything. And again, I thank God that I am still just as ridiculous about backing things up, because last night, the drive went dead.
I will never purchase another product from this company and will advise all of my students to avoid them like the plague. I'm off to the store to find a different brand, rather than deal with the phone run-a-round and get sent yet another replacement that will fail after just a year's time.
