This external enclosure is using USB 2.0 and is backward compatible with USB 1.1. Most Pentium II, Pentium III and early Pentium IV laptops and computers have USB 1.1. It can be powered by USB 2.0. Some USB 1.1 ports do not have power and you have to use the keyboard connector to draw power(cable is provided). In most cases you can use both cables to draw enough power to run this drive properly especially when using it to write cdroms or dvdroms.

Slim DVD enclosure -2, Amazon +2 Jul 22, 2010 For some reason my order did not include a faceplate as shown in the picture and reported by other reviewers. I even reordered this item for a second time, but again it comes without a faceplate(I laid out all the parts just to be sure). I tried using my old dvdrw's faceplate but then it will not fit into the enclosure. I am disappoint. Either this item has bad QA or the manufacturer stopped supplying face plates for this item. Without the face plate dust and particles may get into your drive, not to mention it will look ugly too.

Work like a charm Jun 21, 2010 My old laptop died on me. I decided to salvage the parts instead of repairing it. Bought this enclosure case because of the low price. It simply works. The design is plain and simple, which is the way I like it. Come with two cables, one is normal USB cable (Type B, I believe), and another is for drawing electricity from another USB port. I never needed to use the second cable, even when I burned DVD-R in full speed.
The front plate is a bit flimsy, but I can live with it.

In general, this is cheap but overall quality product, works fine, and power seems to be enough with most laptops I've tested. My only complain is about big sized USB connector at the drive side. It easilly can be MiniUSB type, and that will save a lot of space in the bag, since MiniUSB is more comonnly used so there is a bigger chances that typical user already has such cable, so no need for carrying extra cables around.
completely satisfied Apr 26, 2010 Case is all plastic but sturdy. There are no screws involved and the case simply snaps together after you attach your drive to the enclosure's ide attachment. The USB cable alone was enough to provide power to the drive and Windows 7 installed the driver automatically. The whole process took less than 10 minutes and now I have a portable DVD burner, yea!
Go price, meets requirements Apr 24, 2010 It's good. The front bezel cover does not fit, but that is not a big deal. I can see which place is the eject button and I don't use it much on my netbook. I would still recommend due to price and quick shipping.
