Bring your earplugs when buring DVDs on this thing Aug 23, 2006
By fenwah Let me first say that this DVD writer does an excellent job at what it's supposed to do...write DVDs. I have stored all my digital pictures on DVDs and play them as a slideshow on my HD TV...my kids love it.
Yes, the unit is bulky, but I have more than enough space on my computer desk for it. I like the design of the writer...has like a mirror effect on the front of the writer.
My only complaint is how noisy it is. I used to think my PC mad a lot of noise...well this writer takes the cake. It takes a few minutes to get used to the loud fan...and then you get used to it. You'll really get a feel for how loud the fan is when you turn the writer off.
All in all, I am very happy with it. It does the job that I need it to do...and does it very well. Speed wise, I would say it's about average. If you don't burn too many things (like myself), then no worries on purchasing this.

Sturdy USB Recordable DVD Drive Feb 23, 2008
By K. Clark
"The truth must be told"
I purchased this DVDR drive because it is USB.
I have a computer entertainment system connected to my big screen TV. I set up a USB hub about 10 feet from my computer on the living room coffee table. The DVDR drive is on the coffee table so we can put in a DVD movie or game easily without walking up to the computer.
The DVDR drive is sturdy enough to leave on the coffee table (in the horizontal position). If it gets bumped during a movie, there is no movie lag time. It is also a very attractive drive.
Tip to get audio on your movie: Just use the windows media player to play DVD movies. It is free from Microsoft. Why use the software that comes with the drive when the existing windows software already works well?

It works nicely with a MAC as well! Feb 05, 2007

Although Sony only states that DRX820U model is PC compatible it is also compatible with a MAC. However, you will need software such as Roxio Toast that support it. If you have supported software, you can save up to $50 by passing up on the U/L designation that includes the Mac software. "L" is for iLink (similar to Firewire).
The unit does create a little noise (much like a CD driver does) when writing but not enough too be an issue.
Great Little Burner Jan 10, 2009
By Paul H. Danks I have used this machine for over a year.
I am impressed to the ability to be an external device. I get tired of open the computer case up and installing stuff in bays, and trying to get the right cables to fit.
My unit is quiet. It isn't what I would call terrible noise. My experience, all CD drives really get cranked up when they start.
My unit is very stable. I have it in the bracket as shown in the picture, in the vertical position.
My unit came with Nero, and after using it for a short time, it seems pretty simple trying to decide if you are going to make back up's of CD, DVD's or photo disks.

Great hardware, beware of software headache! Dec 15, 2007
By Kiril K. Kolev Be prepared for:
-- A great Sony product;
-- Spending money on DVD burning software ($59.99 if you buy Nero);
-- Having tremendous headache with your registry once you uninstall the included trial software of Nero.
I have no clue what possessed Sony to include a TRIAL version of the Nero buring software. My previous MSI external CD burner had the full version of the software included with the product. Therefore, BEFORE installing it, you need to decide whether you'll use Nero and therefore spend extra money on upgrading the trial version, or an alternative software, because of the following:
Once you uninstall the trial version, it messes up your registry and every time you try to play a video file on ANY program (Windows Media Player included, it will ask you for a missing file (advrcntr2.dll). Adding the file to the System folder in Windows DOESN'T WORK!!!
My suggestion is to simply purchase a burning software from a different company, and budget in the extra cost when trying to decide whether to buy this otherwise reliable product.
