4Compatible with thinkPad x61s  Aug 03, 2007 By robby818
I bought this to use with a ThinkPad x61s. It works fine in Windows, however using it as a boot device is problematic. At times the laptop doesn't recognize that it is attached. A workaround is to try rebooting over again, entering the bios, exiting the bios, rebooting, and hitting F10. You may have to repeat this process, but eventually it will show up as a bootable device.

Also, the AC adapter plug doesn't quite fit the AC jack, seems like it is the wrong length, but it does work.

1outrageously slow  Jul 15, 2008 By A. Leghart "aleghart"
I use this for loading software onto servers. I only use it once a month, if that, so I have a hard time justifying buying a new device.

It is slow as molasses. Takes 45-60 minutes to load files and get to the install screen for Server 2008. I realize that its a 4+GB DVD, but no reason to load this slow. Same goes for installing Server 2003, Ubuntu...doesn't matter what the software is. The drive is slow.

For bootup, it takes several attempts before the drive is recognized as bootable. Even then, sometimes the servers will report no bootable media.

Using this as secondary CDR with my notebook, it works OK. Very disappointed that it requires an AC/DC brick, and cannot be run off the USB connection. It is a laptop drive! No reason that it can't run off my ten pound brick of a notebook. I can run a scanner, mouse, and a hard drive at the same time.

When it's time to buy a new device, it will not another Sony like this.

PROs:
- fine for desktop use
- speed fine for normal desktop use
CONs:
- not fit for tech support use
- requires power brick
- has problems as boot drive
- SLOW as boot drive

4Not exactly USB-powered  Aug 09, 2007 By Software Maniac
You get the idea from the writeup that the Sony external CD/DVD drive doesn't require AC power. In my limited experience with it, the drive will not operate without the AC power. But, overall, it appears to be a high-quality device and works as advertised. The form factor is amazing. Since it is portable, it sure would have been nice to have an included carrying bag/case to keep all of the cables/power supplies and the unit together. I use it for the Lenovo Thinkpad x41.

5Works great with UX390N  Sep 30, 2007 By Paul S. Denton
I bought this to use with my UX390N when using a network optical drive proved to be a pain. The UX390 detected and installed the drive in less than 30 seconds. It is very compact and is practical to be used when traveling. So far it has worked very well.

5Win XP plug play works better than expensive drives  Feb 12, 2009 By J. C. Williams
I bought this for my Toshiba Satellite as extra drive does editing and burning. WinXP recognized drive, plug n play, burns multi types of DVDs and CDs. Fast, accurate and light weight! Weighs less than the newer versions even with AC plug. Coaster fail rate is very low. Great small burner esp. for the new notebooks that have no optical drives!
