Fast for a netbook! Jan 18, 2011
By Joe Topp Dual core processor with hyper-threading. Much faster than the single core atom netbooks. I own a N255 as well as this one, and the NB305-N600 blows the N255 away. I have a 2GB Crucial memory stick coming this week, would have been nicer if Toshiba would have just had 2GB installed from the factory.
It's been a month since I have owned this netbook. I LOVE it, I use it daily now and don't even bother with my desktop anymore. It does everything I need it to, email, internet, itunes, pdf files, basic stuff. I installed 2GB Crucial stick and that helped quite a bit. Purchase the memory direct from Crucial... Amazon doesn't sell the right stick at this time.
The wireless N is great. No problems with it connecting, it does so very quickly too! Raise the screen/lid from hibernate/suspend/whatever, enter password, within 5-6 seconds I am online.
Be forewarned that Toshiba has a LOT of pre-installed software that is pretty much useless to most users. I plan to install a Intel SSD drive and full copy of Windows 7 in the next few weeks.
I am getting about 6-7 hours battery life, but I did increase the screen brightness to a realistic level.

Machine is garbage; company does not stand behind faulty equipment Jun 15, 2011
By J. Horres I purchased the Toshiba NB305 mini- notebook a few months ago. After having only used it for roughly a week, the LCD behind the screen cracked rendering the screen unusable and therefore the notebook as well. The LCD cracked from simply closing the notebook. The notebook was fairly new and covered under a standard one year warranty, so we figured we would be able to contact Toshiba and have the issue remedied with no problem. Wrong. The first contact made to Toshiba was by my husband who was told that LCD damage is not covered under the warranty and repairing it would be more expensive than the product itself. He was quoted a repair cost of $500 dollars. The machine itself was a little under $400. I figured the representative he spoke to might have been misinformed and that they would be responsible for a product with an obvious manufacturing defect, so I contacted them myself and was told that Toshiba would pay to send the notebook to a repair depot and have it repaired free of charge under warranty. I was then instructed that they would be sending me an email with a form that I would need to complete to arrange for the shipping and repair of the notebook. I was dismayed to find the form required my payment information for the shipping and handling fees. I contacted Toshiba again and was told the previous representative had misinformed me and that I would be responsible for the $25.00 cost of sending the notebook to the repair facility. I was then told they would incur all other charges from that point, including repairs and its return shipping and handling. I paid the $25.00, figuring it was worth it to not lose out on the larger cost of the unusable notebook.
When the notebook reached the repair depot, I received a letter by email stating that I would have to pay for parts and labor to repair the product, because Toshiba will not cover costs for a damaged LCD. Either I send more money, or they send the notebook back unrepaired. I began to look into this product and see if anyone else had run into a similar situation. I found countless others with the same issue, cracked LCDs on a new Toshiba notebook and Toshiba refusing to repair or replace their defective equipment. Most disturbing was how the damage was caused in the exact same way, from merely shutting the notebook! I called the repair depot with the information from the email they sent me. I found from the gentleman I spoke with that this was a common problem and that his hands were unfortunately tied with this reoccurring issue, because they are a company contracted by Toshiba and have no authority in decision making. Their options are to charge for damaged LCDs or return broken equipment. I explained that the warranty was supposed to cover manufacturing defects and that it was an obvious design flaw. The computer had never been dropped and was practically brand new with no signs of wear and tear. He told me Toshiba knows about the problem, but has not issued any recalls or given any engineering guidance regarding the known issue.
I called Toshiba once again and explained my situation to a case manger. He as an employee of Toshiba was obviously not at liberty to discredit the company or their products, but hinted at it being a bad situation that needs someone to bring public awareness to it. He was unable to break company policy and repair or replace the equipment. I informed him that our conversation would be the last time I would try to resolve this issue with Toshiba directly and that I would inform the retail outlet I purchased this notebook from of this situation in hopes of removing this product from their stores. He sympathized and wished me luck...their employee, that says a lot.
This laptop was a purchase for my son to be able to communicate with my husband during deployments by webcam and email. It was a lot of money for our family and ended in a huge disappointment for everyone involved. A notebook is a portable device made for mobility, and for this one to be so sensitive that merely closing the lid renders it useless is preposterous. This is defective equipment that the company is aware of and unwilling to accept responsibility for. They are in fact trying to make even more money off of their customers by charging them for the replacement equipment and labor. Worse, it is still available for unsuspecting consumers to purchase. This was actually one of the more expensive notebooks on display where we purchased it. We mistakenly believed this ensured we were buying a quality product. At this point, we have cut our losses with this particular item. It is unusable and on principle I refuse to dump any more money into a worthless product and a dishonest company. If I can prevent others from wasting their money on this substandard product or their energy in futile efforts trying to encourage Toshiba to respond in an ethical manner, at least something positive will come out of this terrible experience.

By Don Jay I was a bit disappointed at first, the review I read had praised how much faster and better this version of the Atom processor was. The machine I got seemed to freeze up if I tried to run more than 3 things at a time, so I maxed out the RAM to 2gigs. After that still didn't seem to fix things I did some investigating online about the Windows 7 Starter that it came installed with, it is designed to make netbooks look less attractive, you can only have 3 things on your desktop at a time. I upgraded to Professional and it was like night and day. With the upgrades this netbook is very capable, much faster than the NB205s. The battery lasts forever, so far not less than 7 hours no matter what I do with it. It has plenty of speed for what I want to do; Hulu and Netflix runs great, the WIFI is much better than the one in the NB205 I had been using. It's even a great conversation starter, it looks good.
One of the main reasons I picked the Toshiba was that my girlfriend bought a NB205 with XP on it in February of last year. A pretty good machine; a little too slow to run Hulu or even Netflix, but everything else that we ran on it seemed to do OK. I really loved the portability, the long battery life, the ability to pull pictures off our camera anywhere, edit them, and send them out to friends as soon as we took them, it went with us everywhere, it WAS great. So we got to depend on having it around. But recently (the last week or so) there have been some major issues cropping up with her NB205 that are making me very nervous about my new (now 3 week old) NB305.
The NB205 has become very hesitant to turn on, and this is apparently a pretty common problem with the NB200 series; [Toshiba Forums]([...]) , and in looking at the discussions on its own web forum, it is an issue that Toshiba has no interest at all in addressing. Let's hear it for standing behind your product and great customer service, yeah, not so much.
So now here I am wondering when my cute new computer, that while it is running great and I am in love with it, is going to turn into a $350 paperweight. It IS running great NOW, but I didn't get the 3 year protection when I bought it, bad move on my part. With the new problem in my Girlfriends NB205 I would highly recommend that anyone who does decide to get this machine GET THE PROTECTION, and back up your hard drive often. At least that way you can get it fixed or replaced after the factory warranty rolls over, and you still have access to your data.
So back to the basics; this computer is very quick for a netbook, it has a pretty respectable hard drive size, the WIFI has killer reception, and this model has 2 OK-ish speakers instead of the single crappy speaker in the old NB200 series. Toshiba changed the shape of the battery from the NB200s making it sit up a little higher. It gets more air through the fan than before, but I still got a netbook size Chillmat for it and it stays very cool. I love the look and feel of the new anodized aluminum case over the old (baby pink) plastic on my Girlfriends NB205.
I really am in love with this little computer. I just wish that I was still blind to the potential for it to just quit wanting to fire up someday however far down the road, so that I could enjoy it more.
I would still recommend this computer with the caveat that you need to cover yourself with the extended protection from Amazon. Because from the looks of things Toshiba is going to leave you hanging if there is a problem.

Don't Need My Laptop Anymore! Feb 07, 2011
By D. Maurice After two weeks of testing this machine I am ready to walk-away from laptops.
This is our second NB305. We have the NB305-N442. The N600 is a dual-core atom processor while the N442 is single core. The top of its case is brushed aluminum, compared to the N442's plastic. These are the only two physical differences I see.
We swapped out the standard drive for a Zalman N128 solid state drive ("SSD"). Installed Windows 7 Professional (you only need the 32-bit version since this machine only supports 2GB of memory). Most drivers load with the Win 7 install, but you will need a few which you can download from the Tosh support website. While this route is extra work, you get rid of the bloat-ware that comes preinstalled on the disk drive it ships with. We have had many Tosh laptops since 1995 and the bloatware just keeps getting worse. In our experience, it slows the machine down. Swapping out the shipped drive and doing a clean install on an SSD gives you great speed gains in loading the OS and the programs you install.
In this configuration, the OS load time is FAST, especially out of hibernation. If you are using your laptop for word-processing, VPN, remote desktop or email, you are going to love this machine. Using the configuration above with Office 2010, will get Word or Outlook loaded in about 5 seconds! I've used my PowerPoint off of it to give presentations without a hitch.
I travel alot and this is where the machine shines. At airport security it is easy to pull out of a bag, it weighs less than three pounds. On the plane, I do not have to worry about my screen getting jammed up when the seat in front of me reclines. It is light and powerful, but battery life is outstanding. Based on your power settings, you can stretch this to over 8 hours (make sure you shut off the WiFi!). So a coast-to-coast flight is no problem. I have not run out of power on a flight with either the N442 or this model.
I also carry an extra battery, just in case. The machine will charge your mobile phone through one of its USB ports and having the extra battery can be a life saver when your flight is delayed and power outlets are scarce.
Some have commented that the SSD prolongs battery life. I can't say since I have not run it without an SSD.
The performance of this machine, coupled with its light-weight and battery power really make it a laptop replacement for me.
Drawbacks? Netbooks are not about video playback, and while this machine is much better than the N442, it's video is not as robust as a multimedia laptop. That goes for sound too. Speakers are very low. You can get around this by using an external USB speaker like the Altec Orbit iML227. However, if you are using the machine like I am, video playback and sound fidelity are of no concern.

By Jonathon Recker I'm running the Toshiba NB305-N600 with 2G memory. The dual core processor and wifi 801N is working fantasticly. I've loaded MS-Office 2007 and McAfee 2011. I've seen no reduction of functionality or processing speed compared to my desk top (2.8Ghz single core processor/4Gb RAM) or my laptop (1.6Ghz single core processor/2Gb RAM/Wifi 801G). In fact it is faster than my laptop. I see no issues with Windows 7 starter at this point.
Since I already have an external CD/DVD, loading software is easy. I also have a mini 250GB external hard drive (7200 rpm) that I'm using it as a back up and I've created a recovery disk. I'll keep my mini external drive with me for emergencies and go home if I need to use the recovery disk or load more software that isn't a downloadable. At this point, everything I need is being loaded onto the netbook's HD and I'm not even touching 20% of the capacity. With the weight and the battery life, I don't think I'm going to ever miss my laptop. I'm using my netbook for school (not gaming or videos that aren't school related). This is going to make life so much easier since my books can now be accessed on line. Plus the battery life means I only have to charge it up at night and never carry the power cord. Can anything be more complete?
