Netbooks are a new and exciting class of portable computers that resemble mini laptops. Netbooks have become the fastest growing trend in personal computing due to their low price, portability and performance.
For those who may not yet be familiar with netbooks or subnotebooks, let's define what a netbook is and what it is not.
What is a netbook?
The generally accepted definition (Wikipedia) is that a netbook is a small to medium sized, lightweight, low-cost, energy-efficient laptop, generally optimized for internet based services such as web browsing and e-mailing. Netbooks are evolving and can hold more information, run better and run faster as each day passes.
Intel, the company credited with re-inventing the name netbook, defines netbooks as “as clamshell notebooks with 7in to 10.2in screens, “purpose built for internet use.“
A netbook is sometimes called a mini-notebook computer, since it’s looks like a miniature laptop. Netbooks are smaller, lighter, cheaper and often have a longer battery life than a full-sized laptop computer. Whether you are a student, a teacher, a business person, in sales, a geek or a penny pincher, it seems that a tiny netbook may be fine for you. They are small and light enough to toss in a small bag and go. They are cheap. Why spend much more on a traditional laptop PC if a netbook will do?
Is a netbook best for you?
As cool as netbooks may be, and as handy as they are, they aren't for everyone. If you need a powerful processor, are a big gamer, do a lot of photo editing, than a netbook may not keep up. Netbooks do not have optical CD drives, so if you need to have a cd drive, you may want to buy a usb drive to plug in to the netbook. Many cheap netbooks come with Linux operating systems. If you are not familiar with Linux, a Windows XP netbook may be best.
If you want to save money and would enjoy the convenience of a smaller, lighter netbook, then a netbook is for you. Sales of netbooks are exploding, due to their affordable price and portability. When compared to big laptops, netbook batteries can last much longer (up to 7 hrs).
